Here is a brief description of what you are looking at.
White Light or Photosphere Images
are the most popular way to observe, and image the Sun.
By reducing the overall intensity of the disc using special filters and prisms we are able to see the layer at which all the visible energy of the Sun is emitted.
This layer is called the Photosphere.
Chromosphere Images
Sitting about 400 km above the Photosphere is the Chromosphere.
When this layer of Hydrogen gas is excited by the radiation from the Photosphere below, the Hydrogen atoms react and they emit their own form of energy visible to us as red light.
This red energy, known as Hydrogen Alpha (Hα), is visible at a frequency of 656.28 nm which is the band-pass that these images are captured at.
